“the most Colombian of Colombian artists”

Fernando Botero

The self titled “the most Colombian of Colombian artists,” born in 1932, focuses the bulk of his work on still-lifes and landscapes.  His sculptures as well as paintings, usually in oil and watercolor, focus on Colombian themes, especially the violence and suffering that has swept the country.  Botero is unique in his use of “fat” figures, as he has referred to them, although he says it is a form that he was drawn to without thought.  I was blown away by his work that I recently saw in Guadalajara, Mexico.

His work conveys emotion not easily put into to words; it is easier to let them speak for themselves:
